Author’s New Lincoln Book Receives 2016 Award of Achievement from the Lincoln Group of New York

EL DORADO HILLS, CA: February 1, 2017 – Historian and author Noah Andre Trudeau has recently been selected to receive the prestigious 2016 Award of Achievement from the Lincoln Group of New York for his new book Lincoln’s Greatest Journey: Sixteen Days that Changed a Presidency, March 24 – April 8, 1865. The award committee’s vote was unanimous, according to the Lincoln Group’s president Steven R. Koppelman.

“The Award is presented annually to the individual or organization that has done the most to encourage the study and appreciation of Abraham Lincoln,” explained Koppelman. “In making this award, The Lincoln Group of New York recognizes Lincoln’s Greatest Journey as a superb work of research, expertly written, which details an aspect of the Lincoln presidency that has been little studied and a much needed in-depth work.” He went on to state that prior award winners include Doris Kearns Goodwin, Eric Foner, Harold Holzer, and screenwriter Tony Kushner.

New Civil War Book Takes In-Depth Look at Sherman’s 1865 Carolinas Campaign and the Battle of Averasboro

Sherman’s 1865 Carolinas Campaign receives scant attention from most Civil War historians, largely because it was overshadowed by the Army of Northern Virginia’s final battles against the Army of the Potomac. Career military officers Mark A. Smith and Wade Sokolosky rectify this oversight with their newest title, just released by publisher Savas Beatie, “No Such Army Since the Days of Julius Caesar”: Sherman’s Carolinas Campaign from Fayetteville to Averasboro, March 1865,  a careful and impartial examination of Sherman’s army and its many accomplishments.

Following the authors’ previous work, To Prepare for Sherman’s Coming: The Battle of Wise’s Forks, March 1865, which comes to a close just prior to the Union occupation of Fayetteville, “No Such Army” continues with the next stage of the complex developments leading up to the seminal Battle of Bentonville. The authors dedicate their professional training and research and writing abilities to the critical days of March 11-16, 1865, beginning with the capture of Fayetteville and the demolition of the arsenal there, before chronicling the two-day Battle of Averasboro in more detail than any other study. At Averasboro, Lt. Gen. William J. Hardee’s Confederates conducted a well-planned and brilliantly executed defense-in-depth that held Sherman’s juggernaut in check for two days. With his objective accomplished, Hardee disengaged and marched to concentrate his corps with Gen. Joseph E. Johnston for what would become Bentonville.

This completely revised and updated edition of “No Such Army Since the Days of Julius Caesar” is based upon extensive archival and firsthand research. It includes new original maps, orders of battle, abundant illustrations, and a detailed driving and walking tour for dedicated battlefield enthusiasts. Readers with an interest in the Carolinas, Generals Sherman and Johnston, or the Civil War in general will enjoy this book.

Wade Sokolosky is a graduate of East Carolina University and a 25-year veteran of the U.S. Army. Wade is the co-author (with Mark) of “To Prepare for Sherman’s Coming”: The Battle of Wise’s Forks, March 1865, and the author of Final Roll Call: Confederate Losses during the Carolinas Campaign. He was recently selected to receive the annual T. Biography of Civil War Cavalry General Receives 2016 North Carolina Society of Historians Book Award

Barringer was recently honored by the North Carolina Society of Historians (NCSH) at their Diamond Jubilee with the 2016 Historical Book Award for his biography of relative Rufus Barringer, Fighting for General Lee: Confederate General Rufus Barringer and the North Carolina Cavalry Brigade. This is the book’s second award since its recent publication in February of this year. In May, Fighting for General Lee was chosen by the Military Order of the Stars and Bars to receive their 2016 Douglas Southall Freeman Award.

“This is a wonderful book that has been beautifully produced, contains some marvelous vintage maps, photographs, and a reader-friendly text about an interesting subject—the War Between the States,” explained the NCSH judges. “A helpful bibliography section is included, along with lists of primary and secondary sources referred to by this author, and ending with a researcher's delight...a comprehensive index! Due to the many details offered it is virtually impossible to pick and chose what important points to mention with regard to Mr. Barringer’s subject matter. It all seemed important to our panel…That being said, anybody interested in the War Between the States would be thrilled with this edition. It is educational, interesting and difficult to put down. It is definitely a book one would want in their library!”

He graduated from Virginia Tech and worked as a mechanical engineer and project manager for nearly four decades with NASA. Butch’s interests include studying Civil War history, with an emphasis on the cavalry, and physics and cosmology. Butch has two other books under contract with Savas Beatie: a biography of General Thomas L. Rosser, and an edited memoir written by Rosser. EL DORADO HILLS, CA: October 7, 2016 – Savas Beatie author Lance J. Herdegen was recently selected to receive the Civil War Round Table of Chicago’s prestigious Nevins-Freeman Award for 2016.

“Named after famed historians Allen Nevins and Douglas Southall Freeman, the Nevins-Freeman Award is the highest honor the Civil War Round Table of Chicago can bestow,” states the Round Table on their website. “It is awarded for an individual’s contributions to Civil War scholarship, and their dedication to the Round Table movement. Past award winners include Bruce Catton, James McPherson. This year we are proud to give this award to a distinguished author and long-time friend of this Round Table, Lance Herdegen.”

“Mr. Herdegen…has demonstrated his scholarship through his published works and his teaching career,” said Round Table president Jonathan Sebastian. “He has also been an active member of the Milwaukee Civil War Round Table…[and] a great friend to the Chicago Round Table. Additionally, he has worked closely with the staff of the Kenosha Civil War Museum sharing both his knowledge and his time contributing to that excellent museum.”

New Book Seeks Out True Story of Joshua Chamberlain’s Famous Charge at Petersburg

EL DORADO HILLS, CA: October 5, 2016 – Savas Beatie recently announced the release of author Dennis A. Rasbach’s first book, Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain and thePetersburg Campaign: His Supposed Charge from Fort Hell, his Near-Mortal Wound,and a Civil War Myth Reconsidered, which thoroughly reviews all of the primary evidence to learn the true story surrounding Chamberlain’s famous charge.

Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain earned the sobriquet “Lion of the Round Top” for his tactical brilliance leading his 20th Maine Infantry on the rocky wooded slopes of Little Round Top at Gettysburg on the evening of July 2, 1863. Promoted to brigade command, he was presumed mortally wounded during an assault at Petersburg on June 18, 1864, and bestowed a rare “on the spot” battlefield promotion to brigadier general. He survived, returned to the command in 1865, and participated in the surrender of Lee’s veterans at Appomattox.

Chamberlain went to his grave a half-century later believing he was wounded while advancing alone from the future site of “Fort Hell,” against the permanent fortifications of the Dimmock Line at Rives’ Salient, near the Jerusalem Plank Road, through a murderous flank fire from what was soon to become Confederate-held Fort Mahone. In fact, author Rasbach argues, a careful review of the primary evidence left by Chamberlain and his contemporaries suggests that Chamberlain was mistaken regarding the larger context of the engagement in which he fought and fell. An overwhelming body of evidence, much of it derived from Chamberlain himself, demonstrates he actually attacked a different part of the Confederate line in the vicinity of an entirely different road. This part of the Petersburg campaign must now be rewritten to properly understand this important battle, and Chamberlain’s role in it.

Richly illustrated with photos and original maps, and documented with extensive primary accounts, Rasbach’s Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain and the Petersburg Campaign dispels a well-established Civil War myth and sets the historical record straight.

Much-anticipated Final Volume in Award-winning Author’s Chickamauga Campaign Trilogy Recently Released

EL DORADO HILLS, CA: October 4, 2016 – Savas Beatie recently announced the release of the third and final volume in David A. Powell’s magnificent Chickamauga trilogy, The Chickamauga Campaign—Barren Victory: The Retreat into Chattanooga, the Confederate Pursuit, and the Aftermath of the Battle, September 21 to October 20, 1863, which concludes this comprehensive examination, more than a decade in the making, of one of the most important and complex military operations of the Civil War.

The first installment, A Mad Irregular Battle, introduced readers to the major characters of this sweeping drama and carried them from the Union crossing of the Tennessee River up through the bloody but inconclusive combat of the first and second days of the battle. Glory or the Grave, the trilogy’s second volume, which recently won the Atlanta Civil War Round Table’s Richard B. We are sorry to announce that Tony Clunn, author of The Quest for the Lost Roman Legions, recently passed away. Clunn discovered the 9 A.D. battlefield where the German tribal leader Hermann (Arminius) led warriors of several united Germanic tribes and annihilated three Roman Legions led by Varus.

Savas Beatie Title Wins Nathan Bedford Forrest History Book Award

El Dorado Hills, CA January 16, 2014 – Confederate General William “Extra Billy” Smith:From Virginia’s Statehouse to Gettysburg Scapegoat by Scott L. Mingus, Sr. was selected as the 2013 winner of the Nathan Bedford Forrest History Book Award.

The award is given by the Forrest Cavalry Corps to authors writing on the subject of Southern history ranging from the colonial period to present time. Judges tasked with determining a winner of the award focus on three areas: writing style, depth of research conducted, and contribution to the historiography of the subject.

According to Matthew C. Edwards, Forrest Cavalry Corps Adjutant and Treasurer, Mingus’s book excelled in all three areas. “The book proves to be clear, concise, and well written. It is the type of book that once picked up; it is difficult to put down. Secondly, Mr. Mingus has made extensive use of primary and secondary sources, showing that he has mastered his subject matter, Edwards said. “Finally, Mr. Mingus has made a substantial contribution to the history of the War Between the States. In a day and time where the lives and adventures of many Confederate Generals has been told and retold, Mr. Mingus tells the story of a Confederate General little known to many Civil War enthusiasts, thus breathing a breath of fresh air into a subject not yet explored,” Edwards concluded.

“I am pleased and deeply honored to receive this award for my biography of Extra Billy Smith. He was a colorful character whose career has too long been overlooked,” Mingus said. “Bringing him back to the limelight for modern readers has been a pleasure, and I greatly appreciate the recognition with this award.”

William “Extra Billy” Smith was a shrewd postal contractor, skilled attorney, five-term U.S. congressman, Confederate congressman, and governor of Virginia during two wars, as well as a Confederate colonel and the oldest general in either army at Gettysburg. Because Authors Are Our Greatest Assets

What's in a name? Or, more accurately, what's in an email subject line?

Like many companies large and small, we use Constant Contact (an online marketing company program) to create emails for our readers and accounts. We use it to send out a monthly newsletter to a nice number of subscribers, email readers each time we have a special offer on a new book or an announcement about an upcoming author event, and to send pitches to media suggesting authors as source/guests.

We give a lot of thought to email subject lines. What works? What doesn't? What makes people click to open it? This post on the Constant Contact blog has great examples of different types of subject lines, their purpose, and how to use them to engage your audience. (Or, let's face it, just to get them to open the email.)

I looked back through our archive of marketing emails and here is a handful of different types of subject lines we've used recently:

Sharing Our Authors’ Content

Many of our authors have blogs and write some great content. We frequently share their posts on the Savas Beatie Facebook page and in our monthly newsletter to customers for others to see. Recently, we thought of a more effective way to make sure that our readers see this great content.

We sent out an email to our authors who have blogs and asked them to send us a link to a recent post on their blog with some historical content (preferably one that mentioned their most recent book by name with an image of the book cover). Or, write a new post and email us that link. We collected these links for a week, and then put together an email listing these posts, plus the name of the author, a link to his blog, and the name of his books that we published.

Click on the image above to view the email we sent out. Make sure you let the author know you appreciate his blog and posts by leaving a comment. Sometimes being an author is lonely work, and they always appreciate knowing you are there, and supporting their work. Happy Reading!
